Janani Suraksha Yojna : Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) isa scheme that provides basic financial assistance to poor pregnant women to have a child. Janani Suraksha Yojana launches by the Hon’ble Prime Minister on 12th April 2005 and implemented in all States and Union Territories with a special focus on Low Performing States (LPS).

The Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) scheme is an upgraded version of the National Maternity Benefit Scheme (NMBS). National Maternity Benefit Scheme (NMBS) has been replaced by Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY). However, the cash benefits of the National Maternity Benefit Scheme have been subsumed in Janani Suraksha Yojana. NMBS came into force in August 1995. In the year 2001-02, the scheme was transferred from the Ministry of Rural Development to the Department of Health and Family Welfare.

Guidelines for Implementation

Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) under the overall umbrella of National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) is being proposed by way of modifying the existing National Maternity Benefit Scheme (NMBS). While NMBS is linked to provision of better diet for pregnant women from BPL families, JSY integrates the cash assistance with antenatal care during the pregnancy period, institutional care during delivery and immediate post-partum period in a health centre by establishing a system of coordinated care by field level health worker. The JSY would be a 100% centrally sponsored scheme.
